President Bongbong Marcos on P20/kilo Rice: “May chance lagi ‘yan”

Marcos speaks on his promise of P20 per kilo of rice

P20/KILO RICE – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. maintains a positive outlook regarding the reduction of rice prices to P20 per kilo in the Philippines.

During an interview with reporters in Zamboanga City on Tuesday, Marcos expressed his belief that this goal could be attained once the agricultural sector stabilizes, and the cost of agricultural production in the country becomes consistent. “May chance lagi ‘yan. Kung maayos natin ang production natin at maging maayos, hindi na tayo masyadong bagyuhin at ‘yung mga tulong na ibinibigay natin sa mga farmer ay magamit na nila,” Marcos stated.

He added that once everything returns to normal, the government can easily make the necessary adjustments. “Ngunit, kapag talaga nagawa natin ang cost of production binaba natin ay bababa rin ang presyo ng bigas. Bababa rin lahat. Basta’t mas mataas ang ani, kahit na pwede nating ipagpantay ang presyo,,” the President remarked.

Meanwhile, the president has consistently held optimism about fulfilling his campaign promise to lower rice prices to as low as P20 per kilo. He emphasized that achieving this goal depends on improving the value chain, which involves various stages in producing a product or service, with each step contributing to the product’s value.

Marcos affirmed that the government is actively exploring all available solutions to ensure that staple food prices in the market are within reach of Filipinos, especially those facing financial difficulties. On Monday, the National Food Authority (NFA) Council, chaired by Marcos, approved the purchasing price range for wet palay, setting it between P16 and P19, while dry palay was priced between P19 and P23.

He also directed the implementation of a rice price cap to alleviate the burden on Filipinos amidst rising rice costs. Under Marcos’ Executive Order No. 39, which took effect on September 5, the price ceiling for regular milled rice is set at P41 per kilo, and for well-milled rice, it is set at P45 per kilo.
