Here’s the clarification of GMA Network about their AI sportscasters
AI SPORTSCASTERS – GMA Network has responded to the criticism it faced from the online community following the introduction of the country’s first AI Sportscasters, Maia and Marco. These AI sportscasters were unveiled on September 23 as part of the upcoming 99th season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), set to be broadcast on GMA.
The unveiling of Maia and Marco drew an outpouring of negative comments from netizens, who expressed concerns that GMA might be leading in a trend of replacing human employees with computer-based counterparts. Some were anxious that if this experiment succeeded for GMA, other networks might follow suit, potentially threatening the job security of human workers. Additionally, there was a prevailing belief that using AI in broadcasting could be seen as a cost-cutting measure, potentially leading to the displacement of human newscasters.
GMA Network, however, sought to clarify its position in response to these concerns. They made it clear that Maia and Marco were not intended to replace human employees. Instead, they described them as “AI presenters” rather than journalists and stressed that they could not replace the seasoned broadcasters and colleagues who are integral to their organization. Oliver Victor B. Amoroso, Senior Vice President and Head of Integrated News, Regional TV, and Synergy at GMA Network, reiterated the network’s commitment to innovation but also highlighted their dedication to training and upskilling their employees, ensuring they are equipped to thrive in the era of AI.
Meanwhile, an academic professor pointed out that it was crucial for media companies to explore both the advantages and disadvantages of employing AI at this juncture. This suggests that while AI can bring efficiency and innovation, it also raises important ethical and workforce considerations that need to be carefully weighed by media organizations as they navigate the evolving landscape of technology and journalism.
