Tattoo artist electrocuted by DIY tattoo machine

DAVAO ORIENTAL – A young aspiring tattoo artist from Mati City lost his life due to electrocution while using an improvised tattoo machine. The victim, 19-year-old Angelo Zafra, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

According to Mati City Police Chief Lieutenant Colonel Ernesto Gregorio, Zafra and his friends had been using this makeshift tattoo machine for some time. They had been experimenting and improvising with tattooing equipment prior to the unfortunate incident.

The Philippine Tattoo Artist Guild expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, emphasizing that proper guidance and assistance could have prevented the loss of life. They also reiterated their long-standing call for the regulation of tattoo artistry through licensing and proper permits.

Maru Plata, a spokesperson for the guild, highlighted the importance of obtaining a license to ensure that tattooing is not done haphazardly by just anyone. They believe that implementing licensing procedures would help maintain safety standards and protect individuals seeking tattoos.

Meanwhile, a tattoo machine, also known as a tattoo gun or tattoo device, is a handheld device used by tattoo artists to create permanent designs on the skin. It is specifically designed for the application of tattoos and operates using electromagnetic coils and a system of needles.

The tattoo machine consists of several components. The main body houses the electromagnetic coils, which create the up-and-down motion required for the needle to puncture the skin. Attached to the coils is an armature bar that moves up and down as the coils are activated.

At the end of the armature bar, a cluster of needles is attached. These needles are grouped together in various configurations, depending on the desired tattooing technique. The needles are dipped into tattoo ink and penetrate the skin, depositing the ink to create the design.

The tattoo machine is typically powered by an electric power supply that provides the necessary voltage to the electromagnetic coils. The artist can adjust the speed and depth of the needle penetration by controlling the power supply settings.
