Senator Risa Hontiveros reacts to the arrest of Awra Briguela
RISA HONTIVEROS – The senator is calling for an investigation into the incident involving Awra Briguela.
In a tweet, Hontiveros expressed her concern about the arrest of Awra. “We urge the PNP leadership to investigate the arrest of Awra Briguela, as well as the way it was conducted on an unarmed woman. The person who defended a friend from harassment was the one arrested.”
Hontiveros further emphasized the need to focus on real crimes. “Under the Safe Spaces Act, we urge law enforcement to investigate the alleged harassment of the women, Zayla & Mary Joy, who were being defended that night. We should be focusing on real crimes.”
She also called for justice for Awra using the hashtag #JusticeForAwra. “This reflects poorly on the capabilities of the PNP. It is a case of narrow-sightedness and injustice fueled by transphobia and misogyny. #JusticeForAwra”
Meanwhile, Awra was recently charged with physical injuries, alarm and scandal, disobedience to authority, and direct assault at the Makati City Prosecutor’s Office. Awra was arrested due to the disturbance that occurred at a bar in Poblacion, Makati City.
The CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced online. In the video shared by Xian Gaza, Awra and his friends can be seen teasing a group of men at the bar. Awra even asked one of the men to remove his pants before taking a picture with him. When the man refused, Awra’s group intensified their taunting.
The CCTV footage shows Awra forcefully pulling at the man’s clothes, causing both of them to fall and resulting in the man’s clothes tearing. Despite attempts by the bar’s bouncers to intervene, Awra resisted and pushed them as well. Eventually, the complainant and his companions left the bar to avoid further conflict, with Awra following them.
