The term is supposed to have originated when a streetcar driver inquired where someone wanted to disembark. The idiom’s exact origin is unknown.

In January 1913, one of the first instances of the expression being used in response to the query “Where do you get off?” was documented. It can be found in McClure’s Magazine in “The Diary of a New York Policeman.”
