Duterte Rejects Calls to Become Drug Czar Under Marcos Admin

Former President Rodrigo Duterte has rejected the calls to become drug czar under Marcos admin

RODRIGO DUTERTE – The former president declined the proposal to become a drug czar in the Marcos administration, expressing his desire to allow the current leadership to address the country’s drug problem.

Senators Ronald Dela Rosa and Christopher “Bong” Go, who are close allies of Duterte, initially suggested this idea as a means to combat drug syndicates. Police Chief Benjamin Acorda, Jr. also voiced his support for the proposal during a Senate committee hearing.

However, Duterte, who is potentially facing an investigation by the International Criminal Court for his drug war killings, stated that he was not considering the offer. Duterte explained his decision, saying, “Mukhang hindi na rin tama because there is a President duly elected and it is his duty to enforce the law and solve crimes.”

In an interview on Pastor Apollo Quiboloy’s TV program, Duterte further elaborated, emphasizing the importance of giving Marcos ample space and opportunity to carry out his duties within his one-year term. He recognized the issue as a matter of leadership, particularly for the police.

While still president-elect, Marcos expressed his openness to having Duterte continue the drug war, even if it underwent modifications. Official government data indicates that 6,181 individuals lost their lives during Duterte’s war on drugs. However, human rights organizations have contested this number, claiming that the actual death toll, including bystanders and innocent civilians, maybe as high as 30,000.
