Kenneth Egano, the boxer who fell into a coma after his fight dies due to a brain hemorrhage

KENNETH EGANO – The Filipino boxer hailing from General Santos City has passed away due to injuries sustained in his fight against Jason Facularin on May 6.

The 22-year-old bantamweight showed signs of distress while waiting for the scorecards to be announced after their eight-round bout, which took place at Imus Sports Gymnasium in Imus, Cavite, Philippines. The event was part of the “Blow by Blow” series of Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions.

Immediately after the fight, Egano was taken out of the ring, and the referee, Nowel Haduca, raised an empty hand to indicate that Egano couldn’t be present for the announcement of his unanimous decision victory.

Egano was swiftly transported to Imus Doctors Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage. Disturbing photos circulating on social media showed him intubated and in a coma, highlighting the severity of his condition.

The Games and Amusements Board, the governing body for professional sports in the Philippines, confirmed the news of Egano’s passing on social media, offering condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.

Egano, who Amoy Promotions represented, began his professional boxing career in 2019 but faced setbacks due to the pandemic. After nearly two years away from the ring, he maintained a busy schedule, fighting every two to three months with minimal breaks.

Despite being knocked down in the fight against Facularin, Egano displayed dominance for the remainder of the bout, relentlessly attacking the previously unbeaten boxer from Davao City. He came close to securing a late stoppage victory.

Facularin expressed his sorrow and disbelief over Egano’s passing through a heartfelt Facebook post. The 23-year-old boxer questioned why such a tragedy had befallen them, apologized for the circumstances, and hoped that Egano had found peace in a better place.

Before Egano’s death, Manny Pacquiao had publicly committed to covering all his medical expenses, demonstrating his support for the young boxer and his family during this difficult time.
