LIZA SOBERANO – The actress stirred up controversy by commenting on the love team culture prevalent in the Philippine entertainment industry.

In an interview with Peniel and Ashley Choi on their podcast, Liza described the culture as sometimes toxic and stated that actors are often pressured to maintain the appearance of being in love with their celebrity pair even behind the camera. She also mentioned that love teams restrict an artist’s growth and personal life.

Liza, who gained popularity in the industry after being paired with Enrique Gil, received backlash from some netizens who accused her of being ungrateful to the love team culture that helped her career. One netizen called her “inggrata” and accused her of being bitter, while another said that all superstars in the Philippines have gone through the love team phase before making it big.

Liza, whose real name is Hope Elizabeth Hanley Soberano, started her career in the entertainment industry with modeling work for print ads at the age of 12 when she moved to Manila. She made her acting debut in 2011 in the anthology series Wansapanataym and played minor roles in Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo and Must Be… Love before gaining prominence in 2014 for her role in the television series Forevermore, where she played the lead character Maria Agnes Calay.

She has since appeared in several films and television series, including Dolce Amore, My Ex and Whys, Alone/Together, and Make It with You. Soberano is also a brand endorser and signed with Maybelline in 2016.
