AERIAL PERFORMANCE TRAGEDY – Authorities are holding responsible the parties accountable for the death of a female acrobat during a performance in Anhui province, China on April 15, 2023.

The female acrobat, Sun, was performing with her partner, Zhang, on an outdoor stage in Suzhou when she fell from a height of 30 feet and was rushed to the hospital but later died. Initial investigations revealed that there were safety lapses during the performance.

Two days after the incident, authorities released the full investigation results, which showed that safety measures were not in place and the crane operators did not properly operate the equipment during the performance. The investigation was a joint effort between the police and tourism authorities.

The organizers of the performance will be held accountable, including the Anhui Yaxi Performing and Media Company, who illegally conducted the performance without reporting it beforehand to the local authorities. The operator of the venue, Yin, was suspended and held responsible for contracting the performance company without proper supervision.

Local government authorities stated that the performance company will be held accountable based on their country’s Regulations on the Administration of Commercial Performances. Meanwhile, veteran acrobat Hu Jun of Anhui commented that in such performances, acrobats should only be lifted to a height of 15 feet or 4-5 meters. The compensation company has also reached an agreement with Sun’s surviving family members, her husband, and two children.
