Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo Killed In Ambush, DILG Releases Statement

DILG: “Asahan ninyo na hindi kami titigil hanggang hindi nareresolba ang kasong ito”

DILG – The Department of the Interior and Local Government released a statement about the “senseless” killing of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo.

Interior Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. said in a statement on Saturday that based on the reports from the ground, Governor Degamo was talking to some of his constituents who are beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) in front of his house when “a group of individuals clad in army and navy uniforms in full battle gear and were riding two SUVs shot the governor several times, victimizing other civilians as well”.

According to Abalos, Governor Degamo and other victims have already been brought to the nearest hospital for urgent medical attention.

In a statement, Abalos said that the DILG has condemned the “senseless” killing of Governor Degamo.

The Interior Secretary also said that he has given a directive to the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct hot pursuit operations in order to immediately catch the suspects responsible for the crime, adding that the forces of the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (NORPPO), as well as the police in neighboring provinces, have been deployed to search every corner of the area to immediately arrest the criminals.

Aside from this, Abalos also said that the DILG appeals to witnesses who may have been at the scene of the incident to share what they witnessed and to cooperate with the PNP in order to achieve justice for Governor Degamo.

He added that the DILG will continue to provide updates on the incident in the coming days.

In a video posted on Governor Degamo’s Facebook page, Negros Oriental Mayor Janice Degamo said that her husband was pronounced dead at 11:41 am Saturday.

Mayor Degamo also said that her husband is serving his constituents on a Saturday along with his department heads, adding that there were 5 others who died with him who were there to ask for help.
