The sudden rise in the number of motorcycles has been linked to a number of factors. Given the unabating rise in gas prices and transportation costs, it has become essential for many commuters.

In addition, motorcycles have recently become more reasonably priced, and in many poor nations they have quickly supplanted bicycles. It provides quick transportation, sometimes faster than a car since, much to the chagrin of motorists, a motorcycle could readily slip in and weave its way between stationary vehicles on severely congested highways where a car could not move.

However, motorcycle riders are more susceptible to traffic accidents as a result of their size (especially that of scooters and other smallsize motorcycles), which is a major factor in the stability problem. Motorcycle riders are exposed and defenseless in contrast to passengers and drivers on four wheels. Therefore, many motorcycle-related traffic accidents would result in fatalities or very serious injuries.

Recently, a student taking up Bachelor of Science in Criminoloy died on the spot after driving through a “lubak” or rough road. The victim was identified as Arabela Cuenca, 18, a resident of Tagkawayan, Quezon.

The victim was riding a motorcycle driven by her classmate Johnwell Matias around 6 o’clock in the evening on February 6. They were heading to Barangay Agrupacion when their vehile ran through a “lubak” and she fell off the motorcycle.

After she fell from the vehicle, a passenger bus rolled over her head killing her on the spot. Matias only suffered a scratch. The bus driver, identified as Aurelio Cantor, of Goa, Camarines Sur, was arrested.
