Before ABS-CBN lost its franchise, Boy Abunda had plans to leave the network
BOY ABUNDA – The King of Talk admitted for the first time that he had plans to leave ABS-CBN even before the network lost its franchise.
Boy, whose real name is Eugenio Romerica Abunda Jr., is a professor, television host, publicist and talent manager. He started out in show business as a stage actor and eventually as an assistant stage manager. It was during his public relations work in GMA7 when one of its executives, Bobby Barreiro, suggested that he should try hosting a television show.
Then, he began hosting via Startalk, a talk show about entertainment, and Show & Tell, a late-night variety show with Gretchen Barretto. Later, in 1999, he transferred to ABS-CBN, where he has since hosted the programs The Buzz, Private Conversations, Homeboy, Kontrobersyal, SNN: Showbiz News Ngayon, and the talk show interview The Bottomline with Boy Abunda.
It was just recently when Boy Abunda was interviewed by actress Bea Alonzo. Both were former talents of ABS-CBN. In the said interview, the veteran entertainment host revealed that he had plans to leave ABS-CBN even before the network lost its franchise.
“It was a long process. Prior to Covid-19 [pandemic], I’ll be very honest and I’m saying this for the very first time, we started to talk already about possibilities,” he admitted. “We were talking about possibilities of coming back, of coming home. Hindi naman mahabaan na pag-uusap pero nag-uusap na kami,” he added.
Boy Abunda also shared that he remained friends with his former colleagues at GMA Network even though he was at the helm of ABS-CBN for almost two decades. However, the host admitted that his next career move was a big factor especially when ABS-CBN lost its franchise and went off the air in 2020.
