Fr. Dennis Boltron, along with some sacristan, made a buzz online after dancing to the tune of a Christmas medley and and the famous Tiktok dance craze, a.k.a. the Vietnamese song “See Tinh” in front of the altar during Simbang Gabi at Santo Tomas de Villanueva Parish Church in Danao City on December 18, 2022.

It is said to be part of their fund-raising project for poor Church workers. But Fr. Boltron’s dancing drew criticism, especially from those who are very conservative because according to them, the priest’s behavior inside the church was not appropriate.

Msgr. Joseph Tan, the spokesperson of the Archdiocese of Cebu, told Inquirer.net that Fr. Boltron “was not dancing to desecrate the altar willfully.” He added: “It was a nonissue except that it may offend the sensitivities of some in terms of propriety, but it is not a moral issue,” Msgr. Tan. “Some may feel it is inappropriate, but it was done outside of the Mass,” he added.

In the video, Fr. Boltron can be heard explaining the proceeds of their stint. After dancing, he gave his final blessing to end the mass. The intention of Fr. Boltron was also to spread “holiday cheer,” but not everyone was happy about it.

Msgr. Tan claimed that what Fr. Boltron did “is not encouraged but no penalties required.” On the other hand, Msgr. Tan believes that the priest should had removed his vestments first so that his dancing would be “less offensive”.

Dr. Rene Josef Bullecer, member of Commission on the Laity in Cebu, agreed that the dancing should not have been done in front of the altar. Bullecer, country director of Human Life International, also said in an interview that the Church should discipline Fr. Boltron.

“What the priest did was not only uncalled for but sacrilegious and desecrating the altar of God,” Bullecer said. He also called the dancing inside the church “nasty” and “object of ridicule”.
