Alex Calleja: “Sa mahal ng sibuyas, naintindihan ko na si Magellan…”
ALEX CALLEJA – The comedian took to social media wherein he posted a joke on the increase of in the prices of onions.
Many netizens are whining that they can no longer afford the red onions, which are a staple in many Filipino recipes, after selling for P600–P720 a kilogram.
To recall, former Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan claimed that “sibuyas” in the country were more expensive compared to the countries he previously visited. Even celebrity chef Judy Ann Santos complained before about the surge in the price of onions.
Among those who reacted on the continuing increase in the prices of onion was comedian Alex Calleja. On Facebook, he posted a photo of white and red onions with the caption: “Sa mahal ng sibuyas, naintindihan ko na si Magellan bakit siya umikot sa buong mundo para maghanap ng spices!”
According to him, he now undestands why Magellan traveled around the world to find spices.
Ferdinand Magellan was an explorer from Portugal. He is best known for organizing and leading the 1519 Spanish expedition to the East Indies across the Pacific Ocean in order to establish a maritime trade route, during which he discovered the interoceanic passage that bears his name and achieved the first European navigation from the Atlantic to Asia.
During this voyage, Magellan was killed in the Battle of Mactan in 1521 in the present-day Philippines after encountering resistance from the indigenous population led by Lapulapu, who became a national symbol of resistance to colonialism in the Philippines.
Meanwhile, based on the data retrieved by the Department of Agriculture (DA)- headed by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the prices of red onions continue to surge, reaching up to P720 per kilo on Wednesday, December 28 while the local white onions are currently sold at six hundred pesos per kilo.
