The Senate President, in a statement, said it was acknowledged that there’s a need to import sugar but not as much as the 300,000 metric tons indicated in the questioned order which Malacañang has disavowed as “illegal”.

According to him, there were other initiatives the sugar industry stakeholders recommended “to ease the increase of sugar prices” but they will let the President make the announcement “at the proper time”.

What is important is that all the stakeholders came together to propose concrete short term and long term solution on the sugar situation. Looking for the ‘sweet spot’ between producers and consumers,” Senate President Zubiri said.

Zubiri also said that they admired how the President truly wanted to keep the farmers happy with prices acceptable to all and to bring down the cost of the commodity at the same time.

The statement came after he called on the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee to investigate the sugar importation “fiasco”.

Prior to this, the President said at an event for the government’s vaccination program in Manila on Wednesday that he would reorganize the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) following the “fiasco” caused by the unauthorized approval of an order to import 300,000 metric tons of sugar.

The President also said that the reorganization would happen “this week”.
