On Tuesday, DILG Secretary Benjamin ‘Benhur’ Abalos Jr. clarified that the department’s main task is to provide logistic support to the DSWD in the distribution of educational assistance.

Abalos, in an interview on GMA News, pointed out that the cash assistance will only be handled by the DSWD from its main office to the regional, provincial, and satellite offices through the paymaster.

Ang gagawin ng DILG ay mag aassist lang po kami (in the cash aid distribution),” he said.

Abalos also explained that the process allowed a more systematic distribution of cash assistance to the qualified beneficiaries with the DILG and DSWD having clear responsibilities.

The DILG Secretary stressed that the department will provide the manpower, police assistance, and logistical support such as cash assistance venue, transportation, sound system, and chairs.

When asked about the number of recipients, he said that the list is with the DSWD and not with the DILG.

The statement came after DSWD Secretary Erwin Tulfo said in a media briefing last Saturday that the department will work with the DILG in the distribution of education cash assistance through local government units (LGUs).

On Monday, Tulfo said that the beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) are no longer qualified to receive the educational cash assistance for indigent students from the department.
