Senators Risa Hontiveros, Koko Pimental Wants Sen. Leila de Lima Freed from Detention
HONTIVEROS, PIMENTEL – Senators Risa Hontiveros and Koko Pimentel filed a resolution seeking to free former Sen. Leila de Lima from detention.
It is more than four (4) years now since former Sen. Leila de Lima was arrested over drug allegations. Several personalities made claims against the Senator who is also a former justice secretary.
Some personalities accused of involvement in the drug trade pinned down De Lima citing her alleged involvement in the operations when she was the secretary of the Department of Justice (DOJ). The Senator denied all the claims made against her and tagged it as hitting back at her for being a staunch critic of the Duterte administration.
There were several instances when former Sen. Leila de Lima and former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte exchanged heated arguments against each other. She is one of the staunch critics of his war against drugs.
However, during the peak of the Elections 2022 which took place in May of this year, several personalities who previously made claims against the then-Senator retracted their previous claims. Some of them said that they were only forced to do such claims.
De Lima ran for senator during the Elections 2022. She was one of the senatorial candidates under the Senate Slate of then-Vice President and presidential candidate Leni Robredo. However, the Senator’s re-election bid was not successful.
Recently, the 19th Congress has officially opened. Based on a report on Inquirer, Senators Risa Hontiveros and Koko Pimentel filed a resolution seeking to free former Sen. Leila de Lima from detention.
According to Sen. Risa Hontiveros who was the only winning senator under the Robredo-Pangilinan Senate slate apart from the guest candidates, another senator from the majority bloc will be a co-author of the resolution that seeks the freedom of the detained former lawmaker.
