NUPL Hopes Guevarra To Be The “Conscience” Of Next Admin

NUPL on Guevarra’s appointment: “It is a formidable task that will have issues and choices between the devil and the deep blue sea.”

NUPL — The National Union of People’s Lawyers expressed its hopes that outgoing Justice Secretary and incoming Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra will be the “conscience” of the administration of President-elect Bongbong Marcos, especially on issues concerning good governance and human rights.

On Friday, NUPL President Edre Olalia said that they hope Guevarra will recoup the professionalism, trust, and integrity that was “compromised by perceived political partisanship and weaponization of the law”.

Quite a surprise,” Olalia said of Guevarra’s appointment as the incoming solicitor general. “It is a formidable task that will have issues and choices between the devil and the deep blue sea.

While the National Union of People’s Lawyers had “principled disagreements” with the outgoing Secretary of Justice, Olalia said that Guevarra “appears to be a more decent and reasonable public official who is by and large respected for trying to be faithful to the rule of law and due process despite or because of his position.”

Olalia also stressed that they hope Guevarra will not only truly be a “Tribune of the People” but also the “conscience of the administration”, especially on matters of good governance and human rights.

Olalia’s statement came after incoming Press Secretary Atty. Rose Beatrix “Trixie” Cruz-Angeles announced the designation of Guevarra as solicitor general.

Guevarra, who is also the outgoing Secretary of Justice, has previously clashed with the National Union of People’s Lawyers on different issues — including the Duterte administration’s war on drugs.
