ELECTION DAY – President Rodrigo Duterte declared May 9, 2022, as a special non-working holiday to give way to the 2022 Philippine general election.

The declaration is contained in Proclamation No. 1357 signed by the president himself.

According to the President’s proclamation, it is important to make Monday, May 9, a special non-working holiday so that Filipinos can exercise the right to vote.

However, the existing government precautions to avoid the danger of COVID-19 should still be followed.

“There is a need to declare Monday, 9, 2022, a special (non-working) holiday to enable the people to properly exercise their right to vote, subject to the public health measures of the national government,” the proclamation noted.

The President signed the proclamation on Thursday, May 5, 2022.

Meanwhile, among those who run for the highest post in the coming election were Ernesto Abella, Leody de Guzman, Norberto Gonzales, Sen. Panfilo Lacson, Faisal Mangondato, former Senator Bongbong Marcos, Jose Montemayor Jr., Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Sen. Manny Pacquiao, and Vice President Leni Robredo.

On the other hand, running for vice president were Walden Bello, Sen. Tito Sotto, Carlos Serapio, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, Rizalito David, Doc. Willie Ong, Buhay partylist Rep. Lito Atienza, Sen. Francis Pangilinan and Manny SD Lopez.

There will also be elections for:12 seats to the Senate; 316 seats to the House of Representatives; 81 governors and vice governors, and 782 seats to provincial boards in all provinces; 146 city mayors and vice mayors, and 1,650 seats to city councils in all cities; 1,488 municipal mayors and vice mayors, and 11,908 seats to municipal councils in all municipalities.
