The President, whose term ends in a little over two months, said in his weekly “Talk to the People” public briefing aired on Monday night that he’s hoping that the next administration would be better prepared.

I hope that the next administration would — mas maganda ang ano nila, the preparation or whatever efforts that would contribute to, at least, remedy the situation,” the President said, “But with that, I leave it, I said, to the next administration na alam ko mas makaya pa nila kaysa akin.

The President was referring to Tropical Storm “Agaton”, which had just cut through the Visayas and left at least 172 people dead and 110 others missing.

President Duterte also said that wealthy countries which spewed massive carbon emissions should pay the Philippines for the damages caused by climate change.

He admitted that the Philippines would have a difficult time dealing with natural disasters such as typhoons.

Dapat ang mga mayaman na hindi tinatamaan ng destruction caused by itong pollution, bayaran nila tayo for the damage, or dapat silang mag-ano talaga na maggawa sila ng anong paraan na ma — at least equalize ‘yung… Iyong damage natin mas malaki tapos maliit ang ating contribution doon sa climate change,” the President said.

The President added that the Philippines had experienced disasters despite the country’s insignificant contribution to climate change.

Two years earlier, the President blamed climate change for the severe weather disturbances that had been causing massive flooding in many areas of the country.

Meanwhile, the President said in his speech during the distribution of relief assistance to the survivors in Baybay City Senior High School last April 15 that the government will continue providing food and shelter to those affected by “Agaton”.
