Communications Secretary and acting Presidential Spokesperson Martin Andanar said that the President will most likely stay in his hometown during the Holy Week like in the previous years.

Andanar said in his press briefing on Wednesday, April 6, that the President would most likely be in Davao City next week.

I would like to believe that the President will stay in Davao City as usual,” Andanar said. “Noong mga nakaraang taon ay doon lamang siya sa kaniyang tahanan sa Davao City.

To recall, the President has spent most Holy Week celebrations in Davao City since he became president in 2016. However, the President spent the Holy Week making a historic three-country swing in the Middle East in 2017, specifically in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Bahrain.

President Duterte said in his Holy Week message last year that the Holy Week, particularly Easter Sunday, gives a message of hope amid the sufferingS that the Philippines faces because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Palace has declared April 14 (Maundy Thursday) and April 15 (Good Friday) as regular holidays and April 16 (Black Saturday) as a special non-working day.

Meanwhile, the acting Palace spokesman urged the public to remain vigilant as they carry on with their Holy Week plans, noting the threat of the new “Omicron XE” COVID-19 variant that was recently recorded in Thailand.

The usual — maghugas, mag-mask, mag-social distancing. Kung pwedeng iwasan ang malaking crowd. Iwasan natin,” Andanar said. “Napakalaki ng bansang Pilipinas, we have over 7,600 islands, kung mayroon kayong mapupuntahan na outdoor, mas maganda siguro para hindi kayo nakukulong sa loob ng mga lugar, mga espasyo na kakaunti ang ventilation.

In light of concerns about the new “Omicron XE” variant and the upcoming 2022 elections, the acting Palace spokesman said that studies are currently underway.
