Kerwin Espinosa Says Previous Statements Vs. Sen. Leila de Lima ‘Not True’
KERWIN ESPINOSA – The self-confessed drug lord retracted all his statements implicating Senator Leila de Lima in drug trade.
Sen. Leila de Lima is detained in Camp Crame for more than five (5) years now. It was on March 16, 2017 when an arrest warrant was released against the lady senator over drug allegations implicating her name.
There were claims that De Lima was involved in the drug trade inside the National Bilibid Prison when she was the secretary of the Department of Justice (DOJ). There were people who spoke against the lady Senator.
Kerwin Espinosa, a self-confessed drug lord and the son of Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. who was also accused of involvement in drugs, made statements accusing Sen. Leila de Lima of involvement in the drug trade.
After five (5) years now that Sen. Leila de Lima is detained, Kerwin Espinosa retracted his statements against the lawmaker. In a document, he disowned his sworn statements both in the form of written affidavits and during Senate hearings against the Senator. According to him, such statements were made as he was allegedly pressured and intimated to do it.
Based on a report on GMA News, Espinosa claimed that he had not made any deal with Sen. de Lima and he has not given her any money at any given time. Following the statement of the self-confessed drug lord, #FreeLeilaNow trended on social media.
However, Prosecutor General Benedicto Malcontento said that the statement of Espinosa has no bearing on the case against De Lima. He stressed that Espinosa is not a witness in the case against the Senator thus his action has no effect on the charges filed against her.
Currently, Sen. Leila de Lima is seeking another term in the Senate. She continues to plead her innocence from the statements made against her.
