Raquel Pempengco confirms the passing of the grandmother of Jake Zyrus

TESS PINEDA – The grandmother of Charice Pempengco who’s now known as Jake Zyrus passed away on Sunday, April 3.

Tess, whose real name is Teopista Pineda Relucio passed away in Lopez, Quezon, four days before she celebrates her 75th birthday on April 7.

Her passing was confirmed by Raquel Pempengco, the mother of Jake Zyrus.

In an interview, Raquel explained why her mom was laid to rest in Quezon althugh she stays in Cabuyao, Laguna.

“Hindi na siya nagising nung umaga. Nakaburol siya sa Lopez, Quezon. Si Nanay kasi medyo papunta na sa dementia. Hindi na siya mapakali sa isang lugar.

“Nasa poder ko siya dati, pero lumayas tapos ibinalik ulit sa akin kasi wala nang tumatanggap sa kanya sa Laguna,” kuwento ni Raquel.

Raquel Pempengco and Jake Zyrus don’t have communicated for a long time, that’s why she doesn’t have any idea whether the singer already knows about the passing of his grandmother.

Initially known as Charice, the singer rose to fame when he performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show and had concerts with David Foster and Andrea Bocelli.

Aside from singing, he also ventured into acting after joining the cast of the TV series Glee.

In 2011, he released a single titled “Before It Explodes” which was written by Bruno Mars.

In 2013, she came out as a gay woman. In 2017, he came out as a transgender male after having male chest reconstruction and beginning testosterone treatment.

He adopted the name Jake Zyrus, and discontinued the use of the name “Charice Pempengco”.

Previously, he made rounds online following his dare-to-reveal photo.

It was the very first time Jake posted a photo of himself without wearing top part clothing since he underwent several procedures such as chest reconstruction.
