Comelec Opens Posts for Absentee Voting for May 2022 Elections

COMELEC – The Commission on Elections spoke on the 1st day of the overseas voting for the May 2022 Elections.

Both local and national elections are set to be held in the Philippines on May 9, 2022. Currently, both local and national election campaign periods are ongoing in the country.

The candidates are now in the pursuit to reach as many Filipinos as they can before the campaign period is over. Ten (10) candidates are running for president in the upcoming poll.

In the Philippines, automated elections will be held on May 9 using the Smartmatic machines. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) previously announced that they are already in the process of checking the printed ballots to remove the defective ones.

For the Filipinos who are currently living abroad or working in foreign countries, they can still vote for the upcoming May 2022 Elections through the Absentee or Overseas Voting. The Comelec has set up posts overseas so Pinoys abroad can vote.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the Overseas Voting for the May 2022 Elections has started. Comelec said that the first day of the absentee voting was “generally peaceful” and “successful”.

According to Commissioner Marlon Casquejo who is the chairman for Overseas Voting, there are only some posts that have yet to open because of some logistical issues which he tagged as “inevitable”. He cited that half of the 96 posts overseas are on manual voting while the other half is via an automated system.

Casquejo said that only the posts in Pakistan, Timor Leste, Shanghai, China, and Islamabad failed to open during the 1st day of the Absentee Voting. According to him, flights going to Timor Leste and the lockdown in Shanghai are among the reasons.

Based on the report, with regards to the voting in Iraq, Baghdad, Tripoli, Afghanistan, Islamabad, and Ukraine, it has yet to start due to security issues. According to Commissioner George Garcia, a lot of Filipinos in Hong Kong voted.

“Ang ganda po ng nangyari sa Hong Kong… Sobrang dami ng tao, yung pagboto just the same, kitang-kita niyo ang pagnanais ng mga Pilipino na makabuto outside ng bansa,” he said.
