Refugees from Ukraine, open to enter the Philippines
The Philippines is open to receiving refugees from Ukraine in case the situation escalates due to the Russian invasion.
Acting Presidential Spokesman Secretary Martin Andanar said that President Rodrigo Duterte himself said the government was ready to receive war victims in Ukraine.
He said that former President Manuel Quezon had done this after the Israelis were allowed to enter the country when the enemy invaded their country.
“Judging in what the President mentioned a few days ago that the Philippines is ready to receive victims of the war in Ukraine, just as President Quezon did with the Israelis back in the day,” he said.
The secretary said the government has a facility that can be used as a temporary refugee camp in case the victims of the war in Ukraine want to take refuge in the Philippines.
In particular, he said the facilities used by the government in response to the COVID-19 pandemic such as the isolation facility built by the Department of Public Works and Highways in various parts of the country can be turned into refugee camps.
Meanwhile, it was in the early hours of February 24 when Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war against Ukraine via his State of the Nation Address.
In his statement, Putin believes that the leading members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) particularly the US was threatening to take over Russia.
NATO is an alliance of European and North American countries established to promote peace.
Led by the US, NATO- aimed to protect Western European countries from the threat of the Soviet Union and combat the spread of communism after World War II.
