Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have transformed digital assets into virtual collectors’ items that can’t be duplicated. The digital asset, which can be art, music, and even memes, GIFs, and tweets, existed on a blockchain and were bought and sold online.

NFTs have become popular in the past year as collectors and artists turned to the digital market amidst the pandemic. Even Filipino celebrities such as Heart Evangelista and Nadine Lustre officially launched their own NFTS as well.

How it started

Indonesian student Sultan Gustaf Al Ghozali had regularly taken a selfie in front of his computer almost every single day for the last 5 years. He intended to use his self-portraits to create a timelapse video for his graduation day.

He, however, decided to upload his self-portraits to NFT trading platform OpenSea under the title “Ghozali Everyday” after learning about blockchain technology.

On Thursday, he told reporters at his university’s campus that he’s thinking it might be funny if one of the collectors collected his face.

His NFT collection on OpenSea is comprised of 933 self-portraits taken by him between the ages of 18 and 22 (from 2017 to 2021).

I never thought anybody would want to buy the selfies, which is why I only priced them at $3,” Ghozali said.

He started to upload his selfies in late December but it wasn’t until a celebrity chef snapped some up and promoted him on his social media account that sales took off.

How it’s going

Nearly 500 people bought ownership of his expressionless photos and his collection’s total traded volume on OpenSea stood at 338 ETH (more than USD 1 million) as of this writing.

To be honest I still haven’t got the courage to tell my parents, they would be wondering where I got the money from,” he laughed.

Ghozali often offered updates on his OpenSea statistics on his Twitter account.

He also shared that he planned to invest the money and will also continue to take daily self-portraits until he finished college.
