COMELEC’s move to verify political candidates’ YouTube channels was a “much-needed and welcome move”, according to Senator Ping Lacson.
PING LACSON — Here’s what the presidential aspirant and incumbent senator said about the Commission on Elections’ move to verify political candidates’ YouTube channels.
On Monday, Senator Panfilo Lacson said that COMELEC’s move to verify the YouTube accounts of political candidates for the 2022 elections was a “much-needed and welcome move”.
According to Lacson, social media platforms have the potential to misinform the public and could lead to wrong choices of public officials who will have the unenviable task of leading the country in its most trying times if they’re left unchecked.
Lacson likewise said that he hoped that similar moves that encouraged accountability and responsibility on other social media platforms can be done soonest, or at least, before the campaign period begins in February 2022.

“I couldn’t agree more with the Comelec on this move. The use of social media platforms has almost become the qualifying barometer in educating – but ironically, also disinforming to the point of deceiving – our people,” Lacson said. “This will help greatly in preparing Filipino voters to select the right leader on May 9, 2022.”
The poll body said that it would be working with YouTube to add a verified badge for political candidates that submitted their official channel to the COMELEC.
Aside from working with YouTube, the poll body will also work with Twitter and Facebook for the verification of political candidates’ accounts.
COMELEC Spokesperson James Jimenez said that the poll body didn’t see this rule as “inequitable”, explaining that this was part of the poll body’s steps in order to fight disinformation and misinformation.
