Pres. Duterte Releases Executive Order Regarding ‘Lapulapu’
DUTERTE – President Rodrigo Roa Duterte ordered the common rendering of the Battle of Mactan hero as ‘Lapulapu” not ‘Lapu-Lapu’.
One of the subjects taught in Philippine schools tackles the history of the country. Many students have this as their favorite subject because they love discovering significant people and events that left marks in the country’s history.
Philippine history holds several heroes who fought for the liberty of the country and the Filipinos from invaders. They offered their lives in the fight for freedom and many of them lost it as they protect the nation from the foreign ruling.
When it comes to the Filipino heroes, Lapulapu, the hero of the Battle of Mactan, is known as the first hero in the Philippines. He fought against the Spanish colonization brought about by Portuguese voyager Ferdinand Magellan.
However, in teachings and public talks, there are two (2) references of the hero of the Battle of Mactan – one is “Lapulapu” while the other is “Lapu-Lapu”. To this, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte released an order for uniformity.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte released Executive Order 152 mandating all the government agencies to refer to the Battle of Mactan hero as “Lapulapu” and not “Lapu-Lapu”.
In the said Executive Order, the President stressed that the move will help in the education of the youth about the history of the country “which is foundational to the formation of national identity”.
The President directed government corporations, state agencies, and state colleges and universities to adopt “Lapulapu” as the common rendering and not “Lapu-Lapu”. Meanwhile, with regards to the official names established by statute like Lapu-Lapu City shall remain.
This 2021, the country celebrated the 500th anniversary of the victory of Lapulapu and his warriors against the team of Ferdinand Magellan in Mactan. It took place on April 27, 1521.
