In a statement, Baste said that he has filed his withdrawal as the vice-mayoralty candidate of Davao City and nominated Atty. Melchor Quitain Jr. as his substitute candidate.

Quitain Jr. was a member of the Davao City legislature, representing the 1st District. He’s also the Majority Floor Leader of the 19th City Council, which Baste presided over as vice mayor.

According to Baste, he’s deeply grateful to the Dabawenyos for the support they have given him and he has no other details to share at the moment.

Baste went to the local office of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in Davao City on Tuesday to withdraw his certificate of candidacy (COC) for vice mayor in the 2022 elections.

He said in a brief conversation with reporters that instructions from his sister, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, prompted his decision to withdraw his COC.

Sara and Baste had earlier filed for reelection as mayor and vice mayor of Davao City, respectively. Paolo, on the other hand, was seeking reelection as 1st district representative of Davao City.
