Harry Roque revealed his option to run for senator in the 2022 elections as a substitute candidate.
HARRY ROQUE — The Presidential spokesperson revealed on Wednesday that he could still run for senator in the 2022 elections as a substitute candidate.
Roque was the sole guest of the Kapihan sa Manila Bay news forum last Wednesday, October 20.
The Palace spokesman said in an interview that he recently found out that the People’s Reform Party (PRP) had apparently asked someone to file by way of substitution, giving him the opportunity to run for senator on or before November 15.
That date was when the last day of the substitution period, according to the Commission on Elections. A substitution was allowed by law in the event any official party candidate died, got disqualified, or withdrew from candidacy.
Roque, who was a member of the PRP, said that he didn’t know who the original candidate was. However, the Palace spokesman stood firm that he will only run for senator in the 2022 elections if Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte will run the presidency.

To recall, the People’s Reform Party disclosed in a statement last October 15 that Roque had been counted as a senatorial candidate of the political party formed by the late Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago.
In a press statement, PRP vice president Rey David revealed that Roque was expected to join former defense secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro Jr., in the PRP senatorial slate as a substitute candidate.
According to David, the PRP remained hopeful that Mayor Sara will reconsider her political decision and run for president in the 2022 elections as the PRP was one of 4 political parties that had committed to renew its coalition with Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP).
