Google announced its new hardware lineup during its “Pixel Fall Launch” event.

Google officially announced its new hardware lineup during its “Pixel Fall Launch” event held Tuesday (Wednesday in the Philippines).

Here’s what the company announced during the event:

  • Google Tensor chipset
  • Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

Tensor chipset

Google Tensor

Google’s first internally-developed silicon Google Tensor signified a big step, and the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were the first devices to utilize the said chip.

The said chip had been built with Machine Learning processes in mind. Google suggested during Tensor’s announcement section at Pixel Fall Launch keynote that lower power consumption was an area where this chip shines.

Google’s new Tensor chip also provided the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro with enhanced features — including the enhanced Android 12 features such as “Live Translate”.

According to Google, the said feature was only possible, thanks to the new chip.

Tensor’s CPU has two high-performance cores, four high-efficiency cores, and two mid cores alongside a 20-core GPU. Also, a Titan M2 security chip ensured that Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro offered a high level of on-device security.

The tech giant finally launched its latest Pixel series smartphones, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, during the Pixel Fall Launch.

The Pixel 6 has a 6.4-inch 90Hz FHD+ display and has a Google Tensor chip, 8GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of internal storage.

On the other hand, the Pixel 6 Pro offered some notable upgrades but the same “core” build — including the Tensor chipset, 12GB RAM, up to 512GB storage, 120Hz QHD+ display, and the best camera setup seen on a Pixel phone to date.

The Pixel 6 has a starting price of USD 599, while the Pixel 6 Pro has a starting price of USD 899. Both devices will start shipping on October 28.

Other announcements

Aside from new hardware unveiled during the event, the company also announced a new plan and a software update as well.

The company’s brand-new Pixel Pass bundled a smartphone, guaranteed biannual upgrades, access to Google Play Pass and YouTube Premium, and the 200GB Google One tier alongside an optional protection plan for as low as USD 45 a month.

9to5Google reported that Pixel Pass was only available if the Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro was bought directly from the Google Store. This means customers can only get Pixel Pass if they bought a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro from the Google Store, whether unlocked or for a specific carrier, or via Google Fi.

Pixel Pass was, unfortunately, only available in the United States.

Google also revealed the enhanced features on the Android 12 mobile operating system. Although revealed as Pixel 6 features, Android 12 will gain a number of core improvements in some areas.

Based on a report, some features will remain exclusive to Pixel 6 because of the AI capabilities of the Google Tensor chip — including “Direct my Call”, “Live Translate”, and “Wait Times”.

Those features offered big enhancements or improvements over existing areas such as in translation speed or dictation accuracy with the Google Assistant.
