California Streaming: Apple Announces New Hardware Lineup

Apple announced its new hardware lineup during the “California Streaming” event.

Apple officially announced its new hardware lineup during its online-only “California Streaming” event held Tuesday (Wednesday in the Philippines).

Here’s what Apple announced during its online-only event:

  • iPad 9
  • iPad mini
  • Apple Watch Series 7
  • iPhone 13 Series

iPad 9

Apple started the event by announcing its entry-level iPad, which got a spec bump to the A13 Bionic chip and the same design as its predecessor. The A13 Bionic chip was a notable upgrade as the device remained a strong seller for the company.

According to Apple, the ninth-generation iPad (or iPad 9) has an improved front camera with a more powerful image sensor: 12MP Ultra-Wide camera, 120-degree field of view, and support for “Center Stage”.

The said device also featured True Tone display technology for adjusting the display’s color temperature based on the room a user was in.

Based on Apple’s website, the price for this device started at PHP 19,990 for 64GB variant.

iPad Mini

Apple’s new iPad mini featured a complete redesign with an edge-to-edge display with narrow bezels. The Home button for this device has been removed in favor of a new Touch ID-equipped power button.

According to Apple, the iPad mini was 40x faster in CPU performance and 80% boost in GPU as this device was powered by its newest A15 Bionic processor.

This device also featured 5G cellular connectivity, USB-C connectivity, 4K video recording, 12MP camera, “Center Stage” on front camera, and support for Apple Pencil.

Apple Watch Series 7

The new Apple Watch Series 7 featured rounded edges instead of flat edges. However, the Apple Watch Series 7 was available in new 41mm and 45mm sizes, with Apple saying that the bezels were 40 percent smaller, leading to a 20 percent increase in screen size.

Other notable improvements in the new Apple Watch Series 7 include 33 percent faster speeds for charging, with Apple saying that it will take 45 minutes to go from 0 to 80%.

In terms of finishes, the Apple Watch Series 7 was available in five different aluminum colors starlight, blue, green, red, and silver. Stainless steel and titanium colors were unchanged from Series 6: graphite, silver, gold, natural, and space black.

Based on Apple’s website, the Apple Watch Series 7 will be available in the Philippines “later this year”.

iPhone 13 series

Other announcements

Aside from new hardware, Apple also announced that it will release its next round of software updates on September 20 — including watchOS 8, iOS 15, and iPadOS 15.

In addition, Apple announced new features for Apple Fitness+ and also teased its upcoming movies and TV shows launching on Apple TV+.
