The tournament started in Romania in June 2021 and ended in the US on August 26, 2021.

Wesley defeated the chess grandmasters around the world in the GCT 2021 edition. He is now a two-time winner in GCT history. He first won in 2016.

The prize he earned is $100,000 or a whopping PHP4,988,000.

But did you know that Wesley So is an adoptive son of ’70s actress named Lotis Key?

Lotis was known for being a love team of Comedy King Dol[hy.

Among their blockbuster movies are Captain Barbell (1973), Fung Ku (1973), Facundo Alitaftaf (1978), Darna, Kuno? (1979), Max En Jess (1979), and Bugoy (1979).

Her acting prowess was also recognized when she won a FAMAS nomination, as Best Supporting Actress, in the films Two Faces of Success (1974) and Give Me Heaven (1975).

After a decade in local showbiz, Lotis decided to leave the Philippines and fly to Minnesota, USA in 1986.

But how did their path cross?

Wesley started playing chess at the age of eight. In 2010, his family decided to migrate to Canada.

But Wesley at the time chose to stay in the Philippines to hone himself in the game of chess.

In 2012, Wesley received a chess scholarship to Webster University in St. Louis. Louis, Missouri.

It was in 2013 when he and Lotis crossed paths.

At one point, Lotis asked Wesley what he wanted to do with his life. And if in two years nothing happened to him, he would go back to college.

Since then, Wesley has been Lotis’ “adopted” son, but “not legally” because he was of the right age when they met him.

On January 1, 2015, Wesley officially became a professional chess player.

Lotis takes care of the logistics and all of Wesley’s needs so that he can concentrate on each match.
