Recently, another huge clash took place in one of Ecuador’s biggest jails – the Penitenciaria del Litoral in the province of Guayas. Based on an article on ABS-CBN News, at least 116 inmates died during the incident.

It was President Guillermo Lasso who confirmed the 116 death toll because of the clash inside the Ecuador jail. Based on the report, another 80 inmates were left injured by the incident.

According to Lasso, groups inside the jail are in disputes for power in the penitentiary area. Such reality was tagged by the President as “unfortunate” and he expressed that he is asking God to bless his country to prevent more loss of life.

Throughout the history of Ecuador, this clash inside one of the country’s biggest jail is the worst but it is not the first time that it happened in a penitentiary in the country.

In February 2021, a similar incident took place and it left 79 deaths. Based on the report, in July of the same year, 22 inmates died from the same incident.

Relatives of the prisoners at Penitenciaria del Litoral are coming to the jail to ask information about their loved ones and to demand accountability. President Lasso assured that he would be sending additional security forces to prevent the same incident from happening again.
