During his weekly public address aired on Tuesday, the President had expressed confidence of a victory in the 2022 elections due to alleged lack of viable opposition. According to him, the opposition “will not win” in the upcoming elections.

Sabi ko magtakbo ako ng vice president. Bakit? walang oposisyon eh. Hindi man manalo iyang opposition. Sigurado ako yung Ocho Derecho ulit na naman iyon. Walang ipinakita sa Pilipinas,” President Duterte said.

The President was referring to the opposition’s defeat in the 2019 midterm elections wherein the “Ocho Derecho” ticket failed to win a Senate seat.

Meanwhile, the President claimed that Senator Imee Marcos went to Davao City “hoping” that she would be tapped as the running mate of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte should the latter run for president next year.

However, President Duterte said that he thought his daughter will not run for president which was why he accepted the endorsement for him to run for the second-highest post in the Philippines.

Contrary to what President Duterte said, Imee had floated the possibility of her brother, former Senator Bongbong Marcos, teaming up with Duterte-Carpio in the case he didn’t run for president.

Malacañang said last week that the President’s intention to seek the vice presidency in the 2022 elections was under the perception that Mayor Sara, his daughter, will not run.

Also, Malacañang had said that President Duterte will honor his promise to ditch his plan to seek the vice presidency next year if ever House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez will run for the same post.

However, Romualdez has yet to express intention to run for vice president next year.
