Malacañang Sees President Duterte Dropping VP Plans For Romualdez In 2022 Elections

Malacañang said that President Duterte will drop his plan to run for VP if ever Romualdez will run for the same post.

On Thursday, Malacañang said that President Rodrigo Duterte will keep his promise to drop his plan to run for vice president in the 2022 elections if ever House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez will run for the same post.

However, Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said that there seemed to be “no indication” that Romualdez will run for vice president next year.

During the Presidential press briefing, Roque said that the President will support Congressman Romualdez if he will run for vice president.

Kung tatakbo po si Congressman Romualdez ay susuportahan pa rin niya [ni Pangulong Duterte]. Eh wala pa namang indication na tatakbo si Congressman Romualdez for vice president,” Roque said.

Roque’s response came when asked if President Duterte’s promise to support Romualdez still stands since the President himself had said that he’s running for vice president next year.

It was last June when President Duterte made the promise to Romualdez, noting how Romualdez backed out in the speakership race among administration allies last 2019.

In response, Romualdez said that he had no decision yet on whether he will really aspire for the vice-presidential post, but agreed that the President was “very much qualified and capable” to run for the said position.

Roque described the President as “a man of his word”. According to Roque, he’s there when President Duterte said that he will support Romualdez.

In the same briefing, Roque quoted the President as saying that he will run for vice president next year. However, Roque said that President Duterte made the remark “under the perception” that his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, will not seek the presidency.

GMA News Online reported that Mayor Sara has yet to reveal her plans for 2022 although she had said that she’s open to running for president.
