Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque denied the accusations of Deputy Speaker Rufus Rodriguez and said in his regular press briefing that the surge in coronavirus cases in Mindanao wasn’t because of lack of government response.

Hindi po totoo ‘yan. Hindi po kasi nag MECQ at ECQ roon, at bumaba talaga ang compliance sa minimum public health standards,” Roque said.

ECQ (enhanced community quarantine) protocol only allowed essential trips and services/businesses to operate, while MECQ (modified enhanced community quarantine) allowed essential trips but only allowed decimated operations of non-essential services and businesses.

Likewise, Roque said that there had been equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines across the Philippines.

According to Roque, the national government had been focused on NCR Plus where most coronavirus cases were, but they only account for 38% of the COVID-19 vaccines

The remaining balance, according to Roque, were distributed elsewhere.

Experts from the OCTA Research have earlier identified some cities in Mindanao as “areas of concern” because of the continued spread of coronavirus disease namely Cagayan de Oro, Koronadal, Cotabato, General Santos, and Davao City.

Rodriguez, who was from Cagayan de Oro City, denounced on Monday the supposed neglect of the national government to the coronavirus situation in Mindanao.

A furious Rodriguez specifically slammed vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr during a briefing of the House Committee on Mindanao Affairs for his supposed lack of concern and priority in addressing the increasing coronavirus cases in the region.
