A Filipino fisherman in Infanta, Pangasinan recently took offense at President Rodrigo Duterte’s West Philippine Sea jet ski quip.
Carlo Montehermozo, a Filipino fisherman in Infanta, Pangasinan, told TeleRadyo that he took offense at the President’s recent clarification that his 2016 campaign statement of “riding a jet ski” and challenging Chinese incursions in the West Philippine Sea was just a “joke”.
According to him, the fishermen in Pangasinan were angry that what the President said to him was just a joke.
“Joke joke lang din siya naging presidente natin,” Carlo said.

It was Carlo who asked President Duterte and other presidential candidates during a televised debate last 2016 on what they could do for fishermen like him to peacefully fish in the Philippines’ territorial waters without being driven away by the Chinese Coast Guard in the disputed West Philippine Sea.
Carlo, among 16 million people who voted for President Duterte in the last presidential elections, said that he felt deceived by the President’s pledge 5 years ago.
He also slammed President Duterte for calling those who believed in him back then as “stupid”, saying “hindi akong istupidong tao“.

In the upcoming 2022 national elections, Carlo said that Filipinos must choose their leaders wisely.
When asked if he would vote for another member of the Duterte family if they seek the presidency, he said that maybe he would vote someone else, adding that it’s just going to be the same if it’s another Duterte.
