German magazine Spiegel cited BioNTech’s CEO as saying that the company expected results by September from clinical trials testing the COVID-19 vaccine that the company and Pfizer have developed in babies as young as six months old.

BioNTech Chief Executive Ugur Sahin told Spiegel that the first clinical trial results could be available for the five to 12-year-olds in July and for the younger children in September.

Sahin added that it took about 4-6 weeks to evaluate the said data.

If all goes well, as soon as the data is evaluated, we will be able to submit the application for approval of the vaccine for all children in the respective age group in different countries,” Sahin said.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed the expected timeline for the clinical trial results in younger children.

Pfizer and BioNTech asked American regulators this month to approve the emergency use of their COVID-19 vaccine for adolescents aged 12 to 15.

Sahin was also quoted by a German magazine as saying that BioNTech was in the “final stages before submission” to European regulators for children aged 12 and older.

However, the spokesperson declined to comment on the timing of the submission.
