Xiaomi had been one of the few smartphone companies setting the pace in terms of new technologies in the past few years and had proved that the company was one of the pioneers in charging technology with announcements such as its 80W wireless charging technology.

Recently, Xiaomi had taken its wireless charging technology to another level with its Air Charge Technology which allowed users to charge multiple devices simultaneously without the need for charging cables or a wireless charging stand.

According to Xiaomi, its patented Mi Air Charge Technology made use of a special self-developed tower/box-like device that used beamforming technology in order to send millimeter waves (mmWaves) directly to a device.

These waves were then converted into electric power that can charge the device.

Xiaomi had officially released a short video showing the new technology in action. The said video also gave the public a better look at the box-like device behind the technology.

According to Xiaomi, Mi Air Charge Technology supported the charging of multiple devices simultaneously at long-range at a maximum power of 5W (per device) at the moment.

While that was so much slower than Xiaomi’s 80W wireless technology for smartphones, the company’s main goal didn’t seem to be smartphones but home appliances and smaller devices.

Adam Zeng Xuezhong, the new head of Xiaomi’s mobile division who took over from Lin Bin last year, said in a Weibo post that the plan was to have Mi Air Charge Technology charge wearable devices such as fitness trackers and smartwatches in the future.

Also, it was expected that it would be able to power other small devices in the homes such as desk lamps and speakers.

The ultimate goal was to eliminate the need for wires which became a menace in most households.
