South Korea Reports Highest Surge In COVID-19 Cases

SOUTH KOREA REPORTS SURGE – On Saturday, South Korean health authorities reported its highest daily surge in COVID-19 cases in Seoul.

According to an article from ABS-CBN, officials tallied 950 new infections following several days of reporting 500-600 cases. Meanwhile, some 669 of the cases were reportedly from the greater Seoul area.

Because of this sudden spike in cases, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency raises a concern about a possible major outbreak in the densely populated area. Additionally, President Moon Jae-in said that the situation was “very grave”.

Furthermore, the President emphasized that this would be the “last hurdle before the roll-out of vaccines and treatments”.

To address this, he asserted that the government would take immediate action using the full administrative power to get the spread of the virus under control.

During the early days of the pandemic, South Korea was praised for its quick work of handling the viral outbreak. They imposed as trace, test, treat system and in doing so, were able to control the spread without having major lockdowns.

Meanwhile, to help with the recent surge in cases, 150 additional testing centers will be established in areas with heavy movement. These includes mall strips and train stations.
