Complaints on online scam doubled this 2020
Police have warned the public against online scams this Christmas.
This is after the number of complaints about online scams doubled compared to last year because more people are also transacting online amid quarantine restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
PNP Cybercrime Group spokesman Police Maj. Joseph Villaran said that the number of victims is increasing as Christmas approaches.
“Ang mangyayari makikipag-transact sa legit na online platform then makikipag-usap outside. Doon sila magkakaroon ng transaction then hindi naman darating ‘yung item o appliances na inorder nila,” he explained.
The National Bureau of Investigation advises consumers to buy products and services on legitimate platforms.
“Ang tell-tale sign niya is pagka masyadong mataas ang discount i-check mo. Kapag masyadong nagmamadali, may urgency, i-check mo ulit and then leverage on the power of the internet kung mayroong activities na against dito sa marketplace na ito,” NBI Cybercrime Division Chief Victor Lorenzo said.
