Google AdSense To Say Goodbye To One Of Its Ad Formats

Google AdSense was about to say goodbye to one of its ad formats.

Google AdSense was one of the easiest ways to monetize a website, but the platform itself was about to say goodbye to one of its ad formats.

With this, Google Adsense would drop its link unit ads starting next year.

For those who were unfamiliar with Google AdSense, publishers had the choice of two types of ad blocks

The ones you would see throughout most of the web were display ads, but “link” blocks provided AdSense publishers with an option that was a bit more lightweight.

9to5Google reported that those ads were never as “modern-feeling or as effective for the advertisers”, as such, Google decided to cut them beginning March 14, 2021.

After the cut-off date, Google explained that users would no longer be able to create new link ad units and that any responsive units would automatically switch to display ads.

Thus, they’ll also be switched in the AdSense account with “[previously link ad unit]” affixed to the unit’s name.

As for fixed-size link units, Google would stop serving those entirely in March — either collapsing the said ad or making it invisible on sites using them.

Wit this, Google recommended that users who required fixed-size ads switch to auto ads, native ads, display ads, or matched content before the cutoff date.

According to Google, they had decided to drop its link ads in order to modernize their available ad formats based on the feedback from advertisers, publishers, and users.

In addition, Google said that they’ll be focussing on improving and developing other ad formats in order to help its users grow.
