Senator Grace Poe Criticizes Proposed Jeepney Phaseout
Senator Grace Poe criticized the proposed jeepney phaseout as a part of modernization program “Ang ganda ng pamasko nila”.
On Wednesday (December 16, 2020), Senator Grace Poe lambasted the proposed removal of traditional jeepney along the road within this month. She described the traditional jeeps as road worthy and still useful for public use.
The lady lawmaker called the attention of the government to allow the traditional jeepneys to operate amid the coronavirus pandemic. The proposed jeepney phase out is a part of the public utility vehicle modernization program.
Earlier this week, jeepney drivers and operators in Metro Manila held a caravan to show their opposition to jeepney phase out. The transport group PISTON also asked the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to allow the 100 percent resumption of jeepney operations.
PISTON said that the LTFRB allows only 387 routes to operate while 198 routes are still closed. Some jeepney drivers are already begging along the streets just to earn money to provide the necessities of the families amid the COVID-19 pandemic and tigil-pasada.
“Kulang na kulang mga jeeps natin ngayon. Anong gagawin natin? Muling nagbubukas na ulit ang ating ekonomiya… Ang ganda ng pamasko nila,” Poe said.
