Germany recorded its first case of the new strain of COVID-19

The German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg on Thursday said that Germany had recorded its first case of the new strain of COVID-19.

This, as the new strain of coronavirus disease that had been spreading rapidly in the United Kingdom had been found in Germany for the first time.

In a statement, the southwestern German state’s health ministry said that the infected person flew to Frankfurt from London Heathrow last December 20 to visit relatives and had tested positive upon arrival

In a report on Inquirer, the ministry said that further genetic analysis of the sample at a laboratory in Berlin had yielded a case of B.1.1.7, as the strain was known.

This is the first known case in Germany,” the ministry said.

The ministry also said that the person — who had since developed mild symptoms of COVID-19 — was picked up from the airport by car by family members and had isolated at the person’s family’s residence in Baden-Wuerttemberg since then.

Moreover, the ministry said that three individuals who had been in close contact with the said person had also quarantined.

The rapid spread of the new strain of COVID-19 in Britain had prompted several European countries to cut transport links.

Aside from Germany, Singapore and France had also recorded their first case of the new strain of coronavirus disease.
