OBITUARY: Former World Bank President James Wolfensohn Dead At 86

Former World Bank President James Wolfensohn died at the age of 86.

James Wolfensohn, a former President of the World Bank who assisted in straighten out the finances of major American cultural institutions, on Wednesday died at the age of 86.

David Malpas, the President of the World Bank Group, paid tribute to the former World Bank President.

According to Malpas, Wolfensohn “sharpened its focus on poverty reduction” and “redoubled its efforts to combat corruption”, magnified the impact of development investments, and gave voice to the poor.

Malpas also said that Wolfensohn transformed the World Bank Group by making the organization more open and transparent, increasing decentralization, and advancing the Bank technologically.

Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director at International Monetary Fund (IMF), hailed Wolfensohn’s “lifelong commitment” to combat poverty with professionalism and passion.

He was a brilliant financier, a generous philanthropist and, above all, a great humanitarian who always put people first,” Kristalina said.

James also served as the chairman of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Boards of Carnegie Hall.

The Institute for Advanced Study described James as a “global champion” of human rights, scholarship, economic justice, and the arts.

About James Wolfensohn

James was a veteran of the Royal Australian Air Force and also a member of the 1956 Australian Olympic fencing team.

He was born in Sydney, Australia, worked as a lawyer at an Australian law firm, and went on to earn an MBA degree from Harvard University in 1959.
