9to5Google reported that the Google lets its users “hum, whistle, or sing a melody” to Search on their mobile devices.

In the Google app for iOS and Android, users can tap the microphone and hit the “Search a song” button or say “what’s this song?”.

As per the report, users must hum for 10-15 seconds before “Results from Google Search” were provided. The said list may include cover art and artist name, and also match percentage as well.

“Hum to Search” feature also worked in Google Assistant after saying “Hey Google, what’s this song?”.

According to Google, the said feature was currently available in English on iOS and in over 20 languages on Android, adding that Google hoped to expand the said feature to more languages in the future.

As explained by Google, its machine learning models transform the audio into a “number-based sequence” representing the melody of the song whenever a user hums a melody into Search.

Google also said that its models were trained to identify songs that were based on a variety of sources — including humans singing, humming, or whistling, and also studio recordings as well.

Moreover, Google said that the algorithms also took away all other details — including accompanying instruments and the timbre and tone of voice as well.
