Group Of Concerned Doctors And Citizens Seeks To Lift Lockdowns

A group of concerned doctors and citizens sought to lift lockdowns implemented to curb the spread of COVID-19.

A group of concerned doctors and citizens on Thursday sought for the immediate lifting of lockdowns implemented to curb the spread of coronavirus disease.

This, as the Concerned Doctors and Citizens of the Philippines (CDCph) — a 5,000-member group led by former health secretary Jaime Galvez-Tan — called on President Rodrigo Duterte to adopt a “national protocol” for the prophylaxis and early treatment of coronavirus disease as an “alternative” to community quarantines.

During the launching of the “#Flatten the Fear” campaign, the CDCph said in a unity statement — which read by Galvez-Tan — that the group proposed to President Duterte to adopt a national protocol for the prophylaxis and early treatment of coronavirus disease that aimed to decrease hospitalization and avoid loss of lives.

Galvez-Tan said that the implementation of a national protocol for early treatment of coronavirus disease was an “effective”, “safe”, “inexpensive”, and “science-based” solution in order to address the pandemic in the Philippines.

With this solution in mind, we appeal to the President to lift all lockdowns,” Galvez-Tan said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Edwin Bien said that hydroxychloroquine could be given as “prophylaxis” in order to prevent coronavirus infection, adding that hydroxychloroquine was “safe” if “given in correct dosage” upon consultation with doctors.

However, the World Health Organization had suspended the clinical trial for hydroxychloroquine as a possible treatment for coronavirus disease due to safety concerns.

As of 4:00 p.m. of September 17, the Department of Health recorded a total of 276,289 coronavirus cases in the Philippines.
