Former Mayor Florante “Pong” Ruiz of Maddela in Quirino province died at the age of 61 due to a lingering illness, days after he stepped down from his post.

It was on September 11 when Pong Ruiz stepped down from his post as mayor of Madella.

On Wednesday, September 16, he passed away while being treated in a hospital due to a “recurring illness”.

Maddela town has flown its flag in half-mast to mourn the death of its former mayor.

He was described by his colleagues as a “very generous” public servant.

The former mayor started serving the government as the secretary of Nagtipunan town.

Ruiz, a law graduate, first won the mayoralty of Maddela in May 2001.

He then served as the head of the said town for three consecutive terms until the year 2010.

Ruiz also served as the vice mayor of Maddela.

In the last election dated May 2019, he ran as mayor and eventually won.

According to Inquirer.net, he once led the Mayor’s League Association of Quirino province.

Ruiz was among the mayors who passed away this year.

Last May, Eleanor “Joni’” Villanueva of Bocaue, Bulacan passed away due to sepsis secondary to bacterial pneumonia.
