Magnitude 6.8 earthquake strikes Chile
A 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Vallenar, Chile today, September 1, 2020, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Earthquakes hit without prior signs/warnings most of the time. Recently, several places across the globe were struck off by quakes with different magnitudes.
Meanwhile, based on the latest earthquake bulletin of USGS, the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Chile hit at a depth of 23 kilometers.
The epicenter of the Magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Chile was located at 78 kilometers northwest of Vallenar, Chile.
It was followed by strong aftershocks with varied magnitudes: Magnitude 6.3, Magnitude 5.4, Magnitude 5.1, Magnitude 4.6.
No tsunami warning has been issued as of posting.
Chile is part of the infamous Pacific Ring of Fire that’s why numerous quakes have already occurred in the South American country.

Lumen defined Magnitude 6 with an intensity of 7 to 9 wherein the “damage negligible in buildings of good design and construction; slight to moderate in well-built ordinary structures; considerable damage in poorly built or badly designed structures; some chimneys broken.“
